Getting toKerala

Here is how the flights, highways, trains and buses actually connect to Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, Malappuram and Palakkad, and how to plan around them.

1,042 words 5 minutes Updated Oct 2026

Kerala has four international airports, and which one you fly into changes your first day. Trivandrum International Airport (TRV) suits trips centred on Thiruvananthapuram, Kovalam and the far south. Cochin International Airport (COK) at Nedumbassery is the busiest, with the most connections, and sits roughly 80 km (about 1.5 hours by road) from Thrissur. Calicut International Airport at Karipur is the practical choice for Malappuram, barely 40 minutes away by car, while Kannur International Airport covers the north.

For Palakkad, none of these airports sit inside the district, so most travellers land at Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu instead. From Coimbatore International Airport it is about 55 km to Palakkad town via NH544, roughly an hour's drive through the Walayar pass in the Western Ghats. October to March is the easiest window for any of these routes, since the southwest monsoon between June and September can delay both flights and road travel.

Flying In: Four Gateways, Different Journeys

Road Trips Across the Ghats and Coast

NH66, the old coastal highway, strings together Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kochi, Thrissur and Kozhikode, and is the backbone for anyone driving the length of Kerala. It is a manageable but slow road in places, so treat posted distances generously: Kochi to Thrissur is about 80 km but can take over two hours in heavy traffic. Self-driving is workable for short coastal hops, less so for long days, since night driving through Ghat sections is best avoided.

Palakkad's position makes it Kerala's main road gateway from Tamil Nadu. NH544 runs Coimbatore to Palakkad to Thrissur, crossing the Palakkad Gap, the lowest break in the Western Ghats, which keeps the climb gentle compared with routes further south. From Chennai, expect roughly 470 km and eight to nine hours by road to Palakkad; from Bengaluru to Thiruvananthapuram it is closer to 720 km, which most travellers split over two days rather than drive straight through.

Bus and Rail: The Budget-Friendly Workhorses

KSRTC and private operators run frequent long-distance buses linking Bengaluru, Chennai and Coimbatore to Kerala's main towns, and they remain the cheapest way in if you are not flying. Overnight sleeper and AC services from Bengaluru to Thiruvananthapuram or Kochi are common and let you skip a hotel night entirely. For shorter hops, Coimbatore to Palakkad buses run throughout the day and take just over an hour, cheaper than a taxi if you are travelling light.

Rail is often the more comfortable budget option. Palakkad Junction is a major stop on the Chennai–Shoranur line, making it an easy rail entry point, while Thrissur and Thiruvananthapuram Central both sit on Kerala's main north-south corridor. Malappuram is not directly on this line, so most rail travellers arrive via Tirur or Kuttippuram stations and continue by road, about 30 to 45 minutes depending on the destination town.

Picking Your Base and Booking Ahead

Search activity on our own site right now is concentrated in exactly these four areas: Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, Malappuram and Palakkad, alongside broader Kerala searches. That lines up with how people are actually arriving, by air into Trivandrum or Cochin, or overland through Palakkad from Coimbatore. If your route funnels through one of these towns, booking a hotel there for the first or last night avoids a late check-in search after a long drive or a delayed flight.

Of the two main strategies, we would book a Kochi or Thiruvananthapuram hotel near the airport for arrival night, then move inland toward Thrissur or Palakkad once you are rested, rather than pushing straight through to a smaller town after travelling. Skip booking accommodation in transit towns you are only passing through for a few hours. With demand already building for these districts, reserving your room a few weeks ahead, especially in the October to March season, keeps your options open.

Questions people ask

Which Kerala airport should I fly into for Palakkad?

There is no airport in Palakkad district, so Coimbatore International Airport in Tamil Nadu is the usual choice, about 55 km and roughly an hour away via NH544 through the Walayar pass.

Is it faster to reach Malappuram by air or rail?

Air is faster: Calicut International Airport at Karipur is about 40 minutes from Malappuram town. By rail you would reach Tirur or Kuttippuram station and still need a 30 to 45 minute road transfer.

What is the best time of year to travel to Kerala by road?

October to March offers the clearest, driest conditions for both flying and driving. The June to September monsoon can slow Ghat crossings like the Palakkad Gap and cause flight delays at coastal airports.
