Budget Stays in Kerala's Hill Towns:What to Expect

What a modest nightly rate actually buys in Munnar, Thekkady and Wayanad, from room size and hot water to how far you will be from the tea shops.

Stays compared Updated Oct 2026

Munnar town sits at roughly 1,600 metres, and the price ladder here is mostly about altitude and outlook. Rooms in the busy cluster around the Main Bazaar and the KSRTC bus stand are the cheapest, often plain but walkable to Dosai stalls and the tea shops on Aluva-Munnar Road. Move out towards Chithirapuram or Pothamedu and rates climb for the same furniture, because you are paying for a valley view and a quieter night. Anything under about 1,500 rupees tends to mean a fan-cooled room with hot water on request rather than around the clock.

Book in Munnar between October and February for clear mornings; the monsoon months of June to August cut rates but bring leeches on the Kolukkumalai paths and cloud that hides the view you paid extra for. I would choose a mid-range room in Munnar town over a cheap one in Chithirapuram if I had no car, since the town lets you walk to dinner and catch a shared jeep to Top Station. Skip the resorts advertising a view from a hillside eight kilometres out unless you have your own transport.

Thekkady: stay in Kumily, walk to the gate

Nearly all budget rooms for Periyar Tiger Reserve are in Kumily, the small town on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border about four kilometres from the reserve entrance. The main street, Thekkady Road, is lined with guesthouses and homestays, and a simple double with hot water usually sits in the 1,000 to 2,000 rupee band, cheaper in the May to September low season. Periyar's boat landing is a short auto-rickshaw ride away. Most guesthouses will hold your bag while you take the early boat, which leaves before the mist lifts off the lake.

What you get for that money is a clean room, a ceiling fan, and often a home-cooked breakfast of appam and stew. What you give up is space and silence: Kumily's street is busy with jeeps and spice shops. I would pay a little more for a room set back from Thekkady Road rather than one right on it, and I would skip the places advertising Ayurvedic treatments as a headline, since budget rooms rarely have the staff to run them properly. Ask about hot water hours before you book.

Wayanad: spread out, so transport decides

Wayanad is not one town. Kalpetta is the district headquarters and the practical base, with the cheapest rooms and the best bus links to Kozhikode and Mysore. Vythiri and Lakkidi sit higher and greener, about 15 to 20 kilometres from Kalpetta, and charge more for the same standard. Sulthan Bathery, in the east, is convenient for Edakkal Caves and the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary at Muthanga. Budget doubles in Kalpetta town generally run from about 1,000 rupees, rising towards 2,500 in Vythiri during the December season.

The catch is distance. Without a car or a hired scooter, staying in Lakkidi means depending on infrequent buses to reach Pookode Lake or the tea estates around Meppadi. I would book in Kalpetta and use it as a hub, taking a day trip to Chembra Peak and another to the caves. Best months are October to March; the June to August rains make the waterfalls worth seeing but the hill roads slick. Skip anything advertised as a treehouse unless you have confirmed the access road is paved.

What the money actually covers

Across all three towns, a budget room in Kerala's hills usually includes a double bed, an attached bathroom with hot water, and Wi-Fi that works in the lobby rather than the room. Expect to pay extra for a heater, and note that many older buildings are unheated because the cold is mild. Breakfast is often included in homestays and rarely in town lodges. Cards are accepted in bigger properties but smaller guesthouses prefer cash, so keep rupees on hand for the first night and for the auto-rickshaw from the bus stand.

Booking ahead matters less than booking the right location. Demand on our site is concentrated in Thiruvananthapuram this week, but the hill towns fill for long weekends and the Onam period, when families travel. Reserve two to three weeks out for October to February and you will still find the good-value rooms. Check whether the quoted rate includes tax, and confirm the check-in time, since hill-town buses often arrive after dark and some receptions close early.

Questions people ask

Do budget rooms in Munnar have hot water?

Most do, but often on a schedule rather than around the clock. Ask before booking whether hot water runs in the morning, evening, or both, and whether a room heater costs extra. In older town lodges, hot water may be delivered in a bucket.

Where should I stay for Periyar Tiger Reserve on a budget?

Base yourself in Kumily, on the Kerala side, about four kilometres from the reserve entrance. Guesthouses along Thekkady Road offer simple doubles with hot water and breakfast, and auto-rickshaws reach the boat landing quickly for the early safari departures.

Is a car necessary in Wayanad?

It helps. Kalpetta has the best bus connections and cheapest rooms, but sights like Chembra Peak, Edakkal Caves and Pookode Lake are spread over 15 to 30 kilometres. Without a car or scooter, plan on infrequent buses and hired autos.
